Located in historic Arrow Rock, Missouri
The J. Huston Tavern
The J. Huston Tavern was built in 1834 by Joseph Huston, Sr. an early Arrow Rock settler and civic leader from Virginia. Built as a four room, two story brick structure with a summer kitchen, it was originally the Huston family home. Thousands of immigrants heading west passed directly by the Tavern and Huston became known as a hotel keeper, offering the hospitality of overnight lodging and meals to travelers and local citizens.
By the mid-nineteenth century, a mercantile store and ballroom had been added, followed by a large dining room and modern kitchen in 1955. Visitors today can enjoy a drink in the mercantile, otherwise known as “The Tap Room” and dine in one of three dining rooms: The Sappington Parlor, The Huston Room, and The Bingham Room.
The Tavern is one of the oldest continuously-serving restaurants west of the Mississippi River having marked 175 years of continuous service to the public in 2009. It is the centerpiece of the Arrow Rock State Historic Site and is listed in the National Register of Historic Places.
Today, the Tavern is managed by Pfoodman Holdings in conjunction with Hospitality & Tourism Management (HTM) students at Missouri Valley College in Marshall. A major focus of the HTM program is to teach students how the hospitality industry can contribute to the sustainability of local communities through the development of tourism and the use of local products and talent. The Tavern is the ideal venue for students to put this knowledge to use in a practical setting.
